Young People and Drug Use
Duration: two days
Who the course is for: any workers in contact with young
people where drug use is an issue. Some previous basic drugs training would
be advantageous
Objectives:
- understanding of which drugs are used by young people and why
- recognition of different patterns of drug use and appropriate responses
- understanding of the HAS tiers of drug services for young people
- awareness of current best practice in screening young people's drug
use
- understanding of the legal aspects of work, and specific duties1
- understanding of strategies for reaching and engaging young people
- ability to identify and use appropriate resources for young people
- develop skills in education and prevention work
- understand key risk and protective factors related to young people's
drug use
Course includes:
- key drugs, why they are used, effects and risks
- current trends: British Crime Study and others
- models of understanding drug use in young people
- current guidance on drugs work with young people
- risk and protective factors - implications for practice
- giving advice and information
- use of appropriate resources
- assessing competence
- children's rights and parent's rights
- Children in need
- work in outreach and other settings
- screening and referring
- slang
- scenarios: assessing risk and responding effectively
Format: Taught sections, group work, work in pairs and
group discussion
